Our 9-day family trip to Morocco in April 2006 focussed on the royal
cities, with a detour over the Atlas to the Dadès valley. This
being the first visit to Morocco for all of us, we decided to follow a
classic route.

Travel Facts
Itinerary: Zurich - (Casablanca) - Rabat - Volubilis - Meknès -
Fès - Atlas - Tinerhir - Todra and Dadès gorges - Ait
Benhaddou - Atlas - Marrakech - Zurich
Other facts: Our trip was mostly booked via Globetrotter/Sierra Mar.
We rented a Toyota Landcruiser Prado car from Hertz, which prove just
big enough for the five of us and luggage. Gasoline (Eurodiesel) was easily
available at the price of roughly 8 Dirham/liter. The most helpful
guidebook was the Rough Guide on Morocco, with up to date information and useful maps, and just the right level of cultural/architectural background for me.
What I would do differently next time:
- not visit all the royal cities - the medersas and souks start to look the same after a while, if seen in such short time
- start with very touristy Marrakech, so that the tourist queues get shorter during the trip
- spend more time in the South, especially make a trip to the desert
- book directly over the internet next time - to get nicer places in some of the cities
